Printing on the front and back of the same piece of paper, also known as duplex printing, is a function of your printer, not Microsoft Word. If you have a duplex printer attached to your computer, the options for that printer will appear in Word's Print dialog box for you to use. If you do not have a duplex printer, you can still print on both sides of the paper using Microsoft Word's option for manual duplex printing and turning the paper yourself.

1.

Open the Microsoft Word document you want to print double-sided.

2.

Click the 'File' tab and choose the 'Print' command.

3.

By default, 'Print One Sided' shows as the active option for printing. This setting is a drop-down menu you can toggle for different options. Click it to change to 'Print on Both Sides' if you have a duplex printer, or to 'Manually Print on Both Sides' if you plan to turn the paper over yourself.

4.

Click 'Print' to send the document to the printer. If you are manually printing on both sides, the printer will print just the first side of all pages, then stop. A duplex printer will complete the double-sided printing in one step.

5.

Wait for a dialog box on the Word screen to notify you when it's time to flip the printed pages over to print the second side when manually printing front and back.

Tip

Microsoft
  • The 'Print on Both Sides' option offers two choices. 'Flip on Long Edge' tells the printer to print the pages facing the same direction, like a book. 'Flip on Short Edge' tells the printer to print the tops and bottoms of the reverse side on opposite ends of the paper.

Warning

  • When manually turning the pages over for printing, pay close attention to how your printer accepts paper. A symbol on the paper tray usually tells you if the blank side needs to go face up or face down for printing.
